I'm A Barbie Girl

The inspiration for this outfit actually came from an article I read this week in class, "Black Barbie & The Deep Play of Difference by Ann Ducille", focused on the ways in which Mattel presents race and gender in Barbie dolls to its consumers. The article is basically a critique of Mattel and Barbies as a whole.

It got me thinking on the days when I was a little girl, and adored Barbies.

Growing up, Barbies were my most favorite toys and collectibles, aside from shoes of course. I'm biased when it comes to critiquing just what Barbie really signifies, especially the effect she has as an icon to children. I believe she is a role model for young children growing up to show that if you want to be something, anything, you can do it. Barbie is a doctor, ballerina, fashion icon, mother, veterinarian, etc.

The iconic pink shoes that would never stay on Barbie's feet are what this outfit is really centered around. I've had these shoes for a couple of years now and to me they just remind me so much of Barbie's shoes. I am not one for wearing much color but I decided to be a little playful and go with these for the day once I had remembered them in my closet.

This just goes to show that style inspiration can be found in truly anything! Follow my pinterest for more style inspiration.
